Who got beer for Christmas?

If you're like me, and most of you are, you'll find that others are aware of your love of good beer. Of your desire for constant new and interesting varieties of beer.

And for most of you, this will mean that people give you beer.

Nice how that works out, huh?

I got a variety of different beer for Christmas. How about you guys? What did ya get?

My uncle brought a few different Russian and Armenian beers as well as a Czech beer. I also got a variety pack from a close friend of winter seasonals, the pack was based from a company in Oakland, CA so I ended up with largely local brews.

Erebuni and Kotayk were the Armenian brews. Erebuni was an okay European lager. Kotayk tasted a lot like Heineken which is okay, but there are far too many of those beers.

Zhiguiliovskoye was the Russian beer. Try saying that 3 times fast!

And Gold Bohemia Beer was the beer from Czecha. Decent pilsener. Nothing special.

To me, these beers were noticably superior to Asian beers, which makes sense since they're all from Europe (well, the region of Kotayk is in the middle of a country straddling Europe and Asian so I don't REALLY know...).

The variety pack had Lagunitas (that hoppy brewery), Bison (I used to live 2 blocks from them), Cooper's, Anderson Valley, Shipyard, Bridgeport, Mendocino (I met that brewer), Full Sail, Pyramid, and Big Sky breweries winter brews. Montana, Maine, Australia, 2 Oregon, and 5 Northern California brewing companies (Pyramid also does WA, but the Berkeley, CA brewery is bigger and I think it does the CA distribution).

I've had beers from all of these companies and most of the seasonals from them in previous years. I'm generally fond of winter seasonals because they tend to be richer than other seasons (often rich, heavily malted lagers and ales) and sometimes brewers add Christmasy spices like nutmeg.

So, who else scored some beer for Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, or any other seasonal (celebration of vacation from work?) celebration?

Pyramid, if i am not mistaken started in a little town of Kalama Wa, so i think that officially makes it a Wa beer. Sorry about being so picky but Kalama is about 5 miles from where i grew up, and anything as good as Pyramid from that region i like to brag about.

Yup, they were from Kalama but the beer that was produced then and that which is porduced today are worlds apart. Pyramid has so lost it's way to growth.

Well, those of in Berkeley are fortunate to be able to go down and try their "competition" grade beers on occasion. Their wheat beers are great in my opinion. Just the other day I had an "Imperial Wheat" that was over 10% alcohol and quite good. They also had some special blends on tap of one or two of their other beers.

Also, what should be Pyramids way be, per se? You say it as if success should be contain, not that I'm arguing with that sentiment mind you, just curious what you (and others) see as the ideal beer company. I personally think that if a brewery wants to make great beers and blanket the Earth with them in a deluge that the concern should shift to the environment and not towards attacking success just because it occurs. That having been said, I know that there are many of us in Northern California that lament when a small brewery "goes corporate"...much like Pyramid has done.

I am all for a micro brew expanding and gaining popularity but when it is at the cost of the brews themselves it is simply sad. I have tried all of Pyramids brews over the years and find all of them lacking the luster, finesse and taste they used to have. I do keep going back and always disappointed.

Also Portland brewery when it first opened (my company designed and built their conveyance system when they first openned) had the most wonderful Honey brew and once pyramid bought them the recipe was changed (this straight form the brewmaster at Portland Brew) to save money. IT has nover been the same.

When quality is substituted for quantity.....well I think you understand what I am saying.

Drink the Big Sky yet? Opinion?

I'm quite partial to their Summer White myself--a citrusie belgian style wheat beer...for those who haven't tried it. In fact, I just drank one from the bottle last night and now you are mentioning that htey have a Christmas Ale...

Oops, I just got my hands on a bottle of the Summer White yesterday and discovered it was from Spanish Peaks or something. They USED TO BE in Bozeman, Mt but now are being bulk brewed in Maryland by Black Dog. And to make matters worse, it was being sold for $1.99 six pack--apparently, it is getting past its pull date by January. However, I drank a bottle or two yesterday and it was still quiet good! Time to return to the store and pick up a couple of cases...this beer was a hit with a handful of champaign drinkers who "don't like beer". It has orange peel and coriander in it. Very tasty if you like the style...and now the price is more than right...in Oaktown anyways.

As for gifts received, I got a nice bottle of Petrus Winter Ale, as well as one of those Belgian holiday sampler packs with a single each of:
      Serafijn Christmas Angel
      X-mas Zinnebir
      Pere Noel
      Winterkoninkske
      and
      Kerstmutske Christmas Nightcap.

I've had the pere noel on christmases past...
        I loved it...
        very complex but mellow,
not too challenging to the novice beersnob.

Actually never tried the Pere Noel myself, but it's been on my list of interest. Kinda curious about it, since it alleges to be quite hoppy.
Sampling the Winterkoninkske as I post this. It claims to be "single-handedly bringing real hops back into Belgian brewing" although I might take a bit of issue with that. Of course it may just be the two pints of fresh IPA I just polished off at the corner brew pub that's gotten my palate a bit prejudiced!
