A conversation between Cliff & Norm from Cheers

'Well you see, Norm, it's like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the lowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.'

I saw that printed and hanging in the Bathroom at the Pacific Coast Brewing Company.

Oh, BTW, I now live in Oakland, so I should probably post a thread asking questions about good local beer locations, and events. I've already found Pacific Coast, and the Trappist. but I'm always ready for suggestions.

San Francisco Brewing Co. is pretty solid. It's on Columbus a few blocks North of Market. It had a strong cigar-smoking contigent last time I was there.

Pyramid in Berkeley is nice inside, but the food is lacking in taste and overpriced (even for the Bay Area). The Snow Cap Ale is nice.

The Englander in San Leandro on Parrot St, while not a sports bar, is an excellent place to drink beer and watch sports. They have a rotating stock of 40 or more microbrews (I think most or all are on tap and they have some that aren't) and the best bar food I've had anywhere. Shockingly, they have English and Irish food that's actually quite good.

I got into a pretty hardcore conversation with a beer purist recently and he went off about how much he loves Lind Brewing in San Leandro. He's in to strict adherence to traditional styles.

And Rogue has a brewpub in The City. I haven't been there, but it's Rogue, so go there!

I've been to Steelhead in Fisherman's Wharf. It was decent.

Marin Brewing Co. has some really neat brews. I haven't been there, but if the beer is good, I expect other parts to also be good.

Jupiter in Berkeley is a great little brewpub. They make some of their own beers and I have greatly enjoyed their Pale and Amber ales.

Down the street (a few blocks north on Shattuck) is Triple Rock. Better beer, less interesting food (no pizza, I think it's all vegi), and I didn't really dig the crowd. A lot of grad students whom I've generally found uninteresting in crowds. It's been a while since I've been there so it may have changed greatly. It's way less women friendly and nice than Jupiter, but I've usually liked the beer better. The Titanium Ale was nice.

        Awesome.

Hey, sending a friend request your way. I'm hoping to meet more locals, and get to know more people. The Beer circles seem a great place to start..

And as the tribe moderator of THIS tribe, you seem to have good taste.

Rogue brew pub sells Eugene Brewing Co ales, which are pretty good (my bf is working outside of Eugene, so I've had the pleasure of tasting some beer up here- better than the coffee 'round here, lemme tell ya...).

I also had a McMenamins Hammerhead copper ale. Two YUMs up. Super good, flavorful, traces of brown sugar in there. Heavenly. In fact, it might rank in my top 3.

I love that quote from Norm! It is framed in the tap room of one of my favorite breweries, Left Hand. Like you in San Francisco, I live in a little slice of beer heaven know as Northeastern Colorado, where I have four breweries and two brew pubs just in the little town I live in (Fort Collins). I collect "beer quotes" so if anyone has any good ones, please post! Here's one of my faves:

            Our lager,
            Which art in barrels,
            Hallowed be thy drink,
            Thy will be drunk,
            (I will be drunk),
At home as I am in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head,
            And forgive us our spillages,
As we forgive those who spill against us,
and lead us not to incarceration,
            But deliver us from hangovers,
            For thine is the beer,
            The bitter and the lager,
            Forever and ever,
            Barmen.
