Has anyone tried it? I had a friend who was into homebrew and one time he gave me what he said was mead. It was awfully awfull. I could not drink the whole thing and of course he was offended. After that, I was tasting it the whole night. No matter what ever I drink, it was still there.

Re: Mead
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 6:59 PMI have a friend who brews mead all the time....I enjoy his very much! He is very patient with it and lets it sit the time it needs to..I find a lot of people are impatient with the fermentation of it and rack it up way too early...but I have also had some bad stuff too....to me it's similar to a wine...but that's just me :)

Re: Mead
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 7:32 PMRandomly, I happened to try some this weekend, that were homebrewed...a clover mead and a blueberry mead (not positive the blueberry was homebrewed, but I know the clover was) and I thought they were quite good...I guess whether you like them will depend on what you are expecting. I know I hear the word brew and I imagine something beer-like, which mead is not at all...to me it was something like a combination of a hard alcohol and a particularly fruity white wine, with strong grain overtones....
I would imagine that the batch your friend made was probably just not a good batch. Try finding some more reliable store bought ones, to get a better idea of what they should taste like.

Re: Mead
Fri, September 28, 2007 - 4:16 PMI've tried a Honey Mead. A friend brought it to our Winter Solstice celebration - very fitting.
I really liked it but you're right about the strong aftertaste. The next morning I could still taste it.
Hmmm...wonder how hard it is to make? -

Re: Mead
Sun, November 18, 2007 - 4:07 PMI made some that tasted like crap at first ...after it aged for a year, it tasted good!
I made 6 gallons with 12lbs honey and some cinamon and champagne yeast...It fermented for 9 weeks...I then bottled it an had to wait a year before it was drinkable...But then it was really good.....and strong..about 12 percent alcohol i think....
There`s this stuff called Tej that`s Ethiopian honey wine that is fantastic....basically the same as mead.....I had some at an ethiopian dinner store that was incredible..That place closed....no more Tej......I`m on a quest to find more though.... -

Re: Mead
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 12:25 AMBlue Nile in Berkeley sells honey mead. It's only a so so Ethiopian place though. I recommend Cafe Eritrea d' Afrique (north Oakland, Temescal) much more strongly (I think they may have the honey mead as well). The service at Blue Nile was as bad as anywhere I've been in the US. -

Re: Mead
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 10:54 AMMead is great! It's one of the best drinks in the world, and certainly one of the oldest. My favorite brand is Chaucer's. www.bargetto.com/chaucers.shtml
Bevmo usually keeps a stock at hand.
A bottle of Chaucer's is a great way to break the ice with a new date, as most people have never drunk it. -

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 8:41 AMHi. As a brewer and mead maker, I wanted to let you know about a Web site that would answer a lot of questions about mead - gotmead.com. It has recipes, instructions for newbees, and lists of meaderies around the country. If you brew beer, mead is a natural - same equipment, different ingredients. Slainte!
