Good Ol' Ice Cold New Castle on draft... mmmmm gets me every time. I know it's not a very fancy beer, but it really is smooth and refreshing.

We were in Portland for the weekend, our 4th year traveling there from the Bay Area for the Fest, and it's always worth it.
I was a bit disappointed that many of the regional Christmas beers (Jubelale, Ebenezer, Wreck the Halls, Snow Cap) we're used to trying at the Fest seemed to either be absent or already gone by 1PM Friday when we arrived.
We made up for it by hitting several local pubs (Deschutes, Laurelwood, Lucky Lab, Green Dragon..) and drinking numerous pints of the best seasonal stuff we could find. :)

I didn't enjoy this today but I totally forgot to post about it:

    Bell's Hopslam!
It's beautiful and not as dark as I was expecting. It smells like a big bright bowl of citrus but has some dark smells around the edges. If a grapefruit wore shoes, this is what his socks would smell like after a leisurely spent day (in a good way.) It's not musky and dirty like DFH 90 Minute. It's one of the most beautiful smelling beers I've had.

When I took a gulp, I noticed that it's way thicker than it seems like it should be. It's got some honey-sweet to it but not even approaching overpowering. The malt backbone only makes a perfunctory appearance; this beer's raison d'etre is HOPS! The hop bitterness is one of the most complex I've experienced. It doesn't hit you all at once. It's more like a wild ride that loops and whirls, swoops and dives and keeps changing even on the same mouthful.

I was expecting a hop "POW!" similar to Stone Ruination but it's more like a continual onslaught rather than a sharp poke. I was surprised to note that, rather than pummeling the palate into numbness, you can actually enjoy the bitter journey throughout the entire glass.

The high ABV (10%) is hidden really well. Well, maybe not "hidden" as much as "hiding itself" from the hop army.

As it is now, Hopslam is one of the most enjoyable beer's I've been privileged to experience.

for the first time, "Ten FIDY" Imperial Stout from Oskar Blues. Holy cow, that is one dark beer!!! Comes in a can... (?!)

If you like the dark & dank, check this one out (one of the only beers I've had that could beat the Yeti in a cage match)
