Re: St. Ides
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 10:56 AMI used to drink St. Ides when I was younger. I loved it back then.. Now, not so much....
They used to carry (or maybe they still do) flavored choices.. -
-
Re: St. Ides
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 11:00 AMI actually like Mickey's so I'll give it a shot sometime.
And the wiki says that they still make flavors. -

Re: St. Ides
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 11:08 AMWhen I first started drinking around 20-21, all I would drink was those flavored St. Ides.. Maybe that's why I don't like them anymore!
Overkill...
They were yummy though, and had a higher alcohol content than regular beers.

Re: St. Ides
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 2:02 PMThere are - believe this or not - a good bunch of drinkable malt brews aka high gravity lagers ...
look for Steel Reserve high gravity (has ' 211 ' on the can/label ) medieval marking for steel
look for "Evil Eye" - 10% abv tastes like a poor man's belgian trippel but fun to throw back once in a blue moon or if you're on a budget but want a beer with some heft and might to it ............
look for "Crazy Stallion" ... cheesy name but ... surprisingly quaffable malt brew ...........
O.E. 800 is ok too .... I get a case of the 16 oz. cans once in a blue moon just for the fun of it..........

Re: St. Ides
Thu, December 18, 2008 - 2:05 PMThis tribe is called Beer Snobs yet we discuss Malt (Shit) Liquor ?!
<There are - believe this or not - a good bunch of drinkable malt brews aka high gravity lagers ...> Yeah, German Beers like Paulaner Salvator
<look for Steel Reserve high gravity (has ' 211 ' on the can/label ) medieval marking for steel> NO, NO, NO, NO! Thin flavorless swill. Flavor not water with high alc content!!!
<look for "Evil Eye" - 10% abv tastes like a poor man's belgian trippel but fun to throw back once in a blue moon or if you're on a budget but want a beer with some heft and might to it ............> Wow a lager that tastes like a Belgian Tripple? Nonsense, they are 2 different styles and malt liquor is not worthy to be mentioned in the same breath. If you want high alc lagers go with bocks and doppel bocks.
<look for "Crazy Stallion" ... cheesy name but ... surprisingly quaffable malt brew ...........>This simply is an oxymoron, no piss beer, only meant to profit on the poor African American communities is tasty.
<O.E. 800 is ok too .... I get a case of the 16 oz. cans once in a blue moon just for the fun of it.......> Wow you are definitely a beer snob if you are drinking this rotgut.
Microbrews, Belgian ales, German Lagers, and other craft brews are the way and the light when it comes to beer, not mass produced swill.
If you must seek out malt liquor try this if they ever make it again:

This discussion does not belong in a tribe purported to be about drinkers of fine brew. -

Re: St. Ides
Thu, December 18, 2008 - 6:31 PMwhat an arse.....to truly know and love beer you need to know the entire spectrum...and everyone has their cheaper beers that they like.....every true beer drinker and lover knows that.....it's "true beer snobs" that I lose respect for.... -
-
Re: St. Ides
Thu, December 18, 2008 - 6:42 PMyeah Jen - fo shizzle ... this is why I occasionally dip into that lower realm of brews to moreso appreciate the more craftily produced ones ..
and again just for the WTF factor ....

Re: St. Ides
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 5:36 PMFuck all of you!!! If you really liked beer you would drink real beer. If I'm an arse you're a cunt!!! There are plenty of good beers that are cost effective. You don't like what I have to say so you call names, whatever!!! I hope it makes you feel better as I apparently struck a nerve. If you want to discuss piss beer go to beer drinkers. You tards obviously don't know good beer. The idea that you have to go to the lower realms of beer to appreciate the fine ales/ Bull shit. So you have to drink MD 20/20 or Night Train to appreciate a bottle of Silver Oak? Life is too short to drink or eat garbage.
But I'm sure you know more about beer because you drink everything while I focus on beverages that improve a meal as opposed to simply get trumped by it. -

I don't know any brewer worth their salt that drinks piss beer . Keep deluding yourself believing otherwise.
What does Dale Carnegie have to do with anything. If there is a brewer that works for a brewpub stand up, and I guarantee that your beers suck if you like 40oz swill punk ass beer. La di da my ass! You muthafuckas don't know shit about beer that is why you drink malt liquor. Fucking retards! -

Re: St. Ides
Sat, December 20, 2008 - 10:14 AMI have had a lot of really good beers. If you read my original post I was asking if there are any malt liquors that are worth trying. I didn't ask for needless chiding and "Fucking retards!" type commentary. What it this, the heated debate tribe? Anyway, I ended up trying St. Ides last night. It was an average malt liquor. Nothing to write home about, but nothing (in my opinion) to get all worked up over, either.

Re: St. Ides
Sat, December 20, 2008 - 8:34 AMI am a brewer who works for a brewpub and though I don't drink these beers it doesn't mean i'm going to knock other people for doing it....everyone has their own tastes but when you come on here and rip people apart for it I think you truly lose the essense of being a beer enjoyer.....it's not as if they drink it everyday...it was just a comment.....are we done now? -

Re: St. Ides
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 11:45 AMSometimes a brand that does disservice to beer needs to be knocked. Call all the names you want. If you not aware of how bad a beer is how can you beer be any good? Like I said malt liquor is shit pure and simple. It is made by mega breweries to prey on lower income black communities. Then again pretentious white fucks always turn a blind eye to this. My attitude is such business models shouldn't be supported. Also piss beer is a waste of time. There are plenty of flavorful ales and lagers which you can get wasted with if that is your goal.
So Jen what brewery do you work at that feels Malt Liquor is such an esteemed style? Do you have a OE, St. Ides or King Cobra clone on tap?
What brewery do you brew at? -

Tue, December 30, 2008 - 11:48 AMOne more thing, initially I was ripping a beer style not people. You attacked me first. You name called first so now I am ripping people. Re: St. Ides
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 5:49 PMDespite a very well reasoned request, I am not going to delete this thread. I apologize for all the discomfort that has been caused by it, but my intentions were good. I'm not stupid, I may not be monetarily fortunate, but I still know good beers and enjoy them along with all the rest of you. Asking if there are good malt liquors is not such a grand sin, especially since I'd had such little experience with them. One particular poster here could stand to get over himself, and my ignoring of his private messages may lead to that happening, or it may not, c'est la vie. -

Re: St. Ides
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 9:47 PMWow!!!
Step out for a couple of pints and a growler fill and look what happens!!!
OK, so my own personal tastes probably fall pretty close to H*e*s*H*'s, but I really don't see why the need to bash each other. Drink what you will, explore the world, and decide for yourself. Don't be afraid to ask other people's opinions, and don't judge those who ask.
I myself haven't cared much for malt liquor for about the last three decades or so but I do have friends who think that it's the only way to go. I personally tend to go for BIG BEERS... Belgians, IPAs, and anything else that is BOLD or EXTREME, but what the hell do I know anyway, and what the F@CK does it really matter in the long run???
I'll challenge anybody here as to their BEER SNOB credentials, but I won't for a second criticize anyone who is honestly evaluating all that the beer world has to offer.
Live long and prosper, or at least drink what you like and like what you drink!
(Hey Jen, so sorry that the "C" word came up here. Not at all appropriate. I hereby apologize on behalf of all male beer snobs everywhere.)
AND ANYONE WHO HAS A PROBLEM WITH THIS APOLOGY CAN "BITE ME!", YOU BUDWEISER-MILLER-COORS SWILLING LOSER!!! -

Re: St. Ides
Wed, December 31, 2008 - 12:26 PMAnd your taste is relative to tasting ass, ass licker. (Thumps chest like mocking ape like anger in here) It is funny how you retards need the last word over a shit beer. So I'll let you have it. I am not going to start the new year debate with angry cretins.
Jen don't fool yourself, just because you brew beer does not mean your taste doesn't suck. There are plenty of bad brewers and plenty of bad beers brewed. All that means is you know the technical side of things. I have judged enough competitions to know that. So go ahead bash me and say what you want, I won't respond after 11:59 tonight. Then you can feel that you are right because I won't be there to point out how lowly your taste in beer is. For all you lame-o's who say that you're on a budget, there is such a thing as bevmo. Oh an by the way "assfucker" that is a fantastic vernacular you have!!! You are the prize of our species!!! Definitely worth a Darwin Award!!! Buh bye !!! -

Wed, January 7, 2009 - 6:48 PMwow....this was a cool thread...I`m not saying who`s right or wrong here...Just that MALT LIQUOR = FERMENTED SEWERAGE. A true beersnob would never admit to liking that swill. It might get you by in a pinch, it might get you a quick buzz, but it still sucks. -
