1st Release- Southern Hemisphere Harvest

Just got back from making a run to restock the pantry and in addition to loading up on various staples I came across an interesting find. I picked up a couple bombers of the first release of Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere Harvest Fresh Hop Ale.
I am NOT the world's biggest Sierra Nevada fan, but I have been enjoying their fall Harvest Fresh Hop Ale for a while now. As a matter of fact, I still have a single bomber squirreled away from the case of '07 11th edition that I drove 25 miles for last Thanksgiving. Their PR says that they've rushed fresh hops back from the New Zealand spring harvest to combine with native malts for this first time off-season offering. At 6.7% ABV, it's a match for their domestic fall brew.
I've got the two bombers chilling in the fridge right now while I'm savoring another surprise find, a nice cold Lagunitas Lucky 13 red. (Can you tell that it's WAY HOT here?)
So I'm just wondering, is anyone else also a fan of Harvest? If so, have you tried this Southern Hemisphere yet?

A conversation between Cliff & Norm from Cheers

'Well you see, Norm, it's like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the lowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.'

So I've been rummaging the ranks of a few lesser-known microbrews lately and I've come across a few that have left me quite wanting in various respects. Just wondering if I've hit upon some bum batches or if the few in question never have achieved more than this level of mediocrity. So does anyone have opinions on:

Nimbus Pale
Peak Organic Pale
Grand Teton's Sweetgrass IPA

I could not drink the whole thing and of course he was offended. After that, I was tasting it the whole night. No matter what ever I drink, it was still there.

If you're not in Los Angeles, this probably doesn't concern you. In any case, here we go...

So I get my beer at 7-11. "7-11? And this guy's posting on the beer snobs tribe?" Yes, this guy is posting about a 7-11 on the beer snobs tribe. A 7-11 at which, in the last 16 months or so, I've had over 150 high quality beers. Chimay, Unibroue, Corsendonk, Delirium, etc.

Anyways, it's in Highland Park. Ave 52 and Figueroa. Just west of the 110. Everything he's got is a 90%+ rating, most of it 97% or higher. Well, not everything. they've got Corona and Heineken and what not, but I don't look in those coolers.

Alright, well that's about it. If you're in the area, check it out. And try not to think of it as a 7-11.

9.5% abv Barleywine Ale from Humboldt, CA.

I had 3 of these on Saturday night, along with a Steam brewery Summer Beer (which I did not like at all) and some marijuana, and within two hours of popping my first bottle I was passed out on the couch for an hour, I had no choice but to do so.

Strong stuff, I look forward to trying the barleywine again. It's very thick and flavorful, I was shocked at the first sip, not having had a drink like that in a long while. The last one I had was Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot over two years ago, which I also enjoy very much, and is likely much easier to find than the John Barleycorn.

Thanks to all for making this an active and interesting group in my absence. I hope my absenteeism did not cause too much difficulty.

I did have two messages about some guy posting something and being attacked by someone with a vendetta about their opinion or whatever. Fortunately, it was months or years ago so the annoyance and drama is long gone!

Let me know how I might be of service, assuming there's no system in place for the individuals here to serve themselves.

The main thing that interests me in any management (if any) is to remove totally off-topic posts if the group isn't interested in them.

Example: a post about knitting with no relationship to beer, I'd be interested in removing (and first notifying the originator of the post what I'm doing and why so they have a chance to save their text).

Example 2: If someone posted about cigars, I'd be more likely to keep it as cigars have a known and popular association with beer (at San Francisco Brewing Co. is a perfect example of this relationship).

There are good beers...
There are great beers...

And then there are THE WORST BEERS IN THE WORLD...

* "Goldstar", the Israeli version of Bud-Light, ranks among the worst beers in ther world. If you've ever tasted brown tap water (like when the plumbing is off), that's pretty much what it tastes like.

Beer Snobs: feel free to contribute your pick of the worst beers!

Who got beer for Christmas?

If you're like me, and most of you are, you'll find that others are aware of your love of good beer. Of your desire for constant new and interesting varieties of beer.

And for most of you, this will mean that people give you beer.

Nice how that works out, huh?

I got a variety of different beer for Christmas. How about you guys? What did ya get?

My uncle brought a few different Russian and Armenian beers as well as a Czech beer. I also got a variety pack from a close friend of winter seasonals, the pack was based from a company in Oakland, CA so I ended up with largely local brews.

Erebuni and Kotayk were the Armenian brews. Erebuni was an okay European lager. Kotayk tasted a lot like Heineken which is okay, but there are far too many of those beers.

Zhiguiliovskoye was the Russian beer. Try saying that 3 times fast!

And Gold Bohemia Beer was the beer from Czecha. Decent pilsener. Nothing special.

To me, these beers were noticably superior to Asian beers, which makes sense since they're all from Europe (well, the region of Kotayk is in the middle of a country straddling Europe and Asian so I don't REALLY know...).

The variety pack had Lagunitas (that hoppy brewery), Bison (I used to live 2 blocks from them), Cooper's, Anderson Valley, Shipyard, Bridgeport, Mendocino (I met that brewer), Full Sail, Pyramid, and Big Sky breweries winter brews. Montana, Maine, Australia, 2 Oregon, and 5 Northern California brewing companies (Pyramid also does WA, but the Berkeley, CA brewery is bigger and I think it does the CA distribution).

I've had beers from all of these companies and most of the seasonals from them in previous years. I'm generally fond of winter seasonals because they tend to be richer than other seasons (often rich, heavily malted lagers and ales) and sometimes brewers add Christmasy spices like nutmeg.

So, who else scored some beer for Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, or any other seasonal (celebration of vacation from work?) celebration?

What graced your table for the Christmas celebration?
We started out the day with a taste of Marin's Hoppy Holidaze. Next up was Affligem Noel, followed by a bottle of Corsendonk Christmas Ale.
After that we popped in the 1951 Allistair Sim "Christmas Carol" DVD and popped open the Gulden Draak Vintage Ale, then finished off the evening with the St. Bernardus Christmas Ale and "It's a Wonderful Life".
Filled in a few of the lulls and gaps with an occasional Sierra Nevada Celebration, Lost Coast Winterbraun, or Anchor Xmas Brew.
Of course one of the best things about holidays is the left-overs, so we've got a nice 750 of St. Feuillien Cuvee de Noel, a sixer of Rogue Santa's Private Reserve, and a couple of Sierra Nevada Harvest Fresh Hops to help ease us on into the new year.
So, what did you drink on the big day???

Samuel Adams 24% beer

Has anyone seen this yet?

I saw a special on beer while on vacation this past summer and one of the topics during the show was that Samuel Adams created a beer that was about 24%. It was really thick looking and packaged in a bottle shaped like the "I Dream of Jennie" bottle. I don't recall the name of it. It was also served in a small glass.

Just curious. I've been keeping an eye out for it, but obviously I haven't seen it yet.

Worst beer brewed in your local area?

Okay, get your snob up, what's the worst around you that you've actually had the nerve to try?

SF Bay Area

I'd say that Pacific Coast in Oakland and Eldos in SF are low on my list (Eldos is now defunct but some evil-sorcers are rumored to be trying to revive it again!). I don't actually mind hanging at Pacific Coast but I'm not a big fan of their line up. Not that I would begrudge them customers or anything...just that you shouldn't be going to a brew pub for "the atmosphere" if one is truly snobby about beer! And, to be fair, there are probably some worse brew pubs out there somewhere!

Hello,

I just joined the tribe. I am a beer drinker and often the odd one out in the group when I go out with friends.
Like ' 3 white wines, 2 red, a Vodka Cruiser, some fluffy drink with an umbrella - oh and a beer for Zahira.
Any other chicks find themselves the only beer drinker in their group when they go out?

Anyway, I'm trying to drink different beers from different countries and while I've tried a few good ones, tonight I tried a bad one.
It's called Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer - yecch! It's German

I tried, I really tried but I couldn't finish the beer!

So far my faves are Boags Premium (best stuff out) and Sakkara Gold.

Hope to learn lots about different beers from the tribe :-)

Apparently the demand for biofuel in Germany is creating a barley shortage because farmers are abandoning that crop to raise governement subsidized biofuel crops.

More info at: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-05-28-biofuel-beer_N.htm

Drink more beer now before the prices go up :)

thats knocked my socks off-
Abbaye des Rocs Triple Impériale
I've had their 'grand cru' and 'brune' before so i knew it would be awesome.
this was a murky brown triple, had a bit or a funky sourness when the bottle was popped and on the pour but only a hint of sourness in the flavor. earthy, spicy with a little candy sweetness, got fruiter as it opened up in the glass, the alchohol became more pronounced too. way too complex for me to do it justice. great beer! 10 percent abv
and Lozen Boer, a Quadrupel brewed by De Proefbrouwerij
Much lighter than the Des Rocs, lots of candi sugar sweetness with hints of bubble gum or even cotton candy, along with dates and cherries. Enough yeasty bite and alchohol warmth (again 10%abv!) to keep it from beeing too sweet. I'll have to try it again when its not the 6th beer of the night...

the deschute's was out of a bottle and was really crisp, but the desolation, i think was the bottom of a keg. it was thick and cloudy, really rich.
i'm trying to remember the others.

We ran through a pretty good roster last night-

* Koenings Hoeven (formerly 'La Trappe') - Quadrupple

*Rodenbach - 'Grand Cru' , a Flemish Sour, one of my all time favorites.
Prettymuch the benchmark of the style.

*New Holland 'Moxie' - an american 'Flemish Sour' - I really enjoyed it, but it could have been more sour, but really, wasnt fair to this beer to drink it after the Rodenbach. Nothing is going to stand up to the Grand Cru!

*New Glarus 'Beligan Red' - a delicious cherry beer -It tasted like fresh cherry pie!

*And 2 new beers from Upland Brewery that arent even on the market yet. (thanks Caleb!)
A raspberry and a blueberry lambic.
Its their first foray into lambics and i was quite impressed.

This one has me stumped for there aren't a ton of of different grains in it to play the palate up....and working IPA's are still something that I haven't really completely perfected...they're getting better but not to anything that "I say I really like it" to.....let me know.....

I'll be drinking a Fantome 'Printemps'. (A friend is in town all the way from Guam, so I'm busting it out) I'm excited!
Fantome specialises in Saisons (Belgian Farmhouse Ales) and I have loved every beer I've had from them.
They are all funky and strange brews with great 'wild' flavors and every batch is different. I have heard they even use different water sources for different batches. Relying on the various artesian wells at the different farms in the area. Some of their beers I have tried had a definite 'hard/mineral water' thing going on, but I dont know if that was really from the water or from some other ingredients.
They brew 4 seasonal beers each year (in addition to other beers) and even these change recepies from year to year, using various herbs and spices etc. from batch to batch. 'Printemps' is their Spring Saison.
I highly recoment their 'Pissenlit' (translates as 'wet the bed') - a saison brewed with dandylions (they steep dried dandylion blossoms for a few days in big kettles - then strain them and brew with the dandylion 'tea').
Their beers are not for the bud light crown, thats for sure, but if you are an adventurous beer drinker - try them!

I've had piraat from a bottle a few times over the years but I had it on tap this weekend for the first time and I think I'm in love.
(hell, I have a new "favorite beer" every few weeks . . . . oh well)
A belgian strong ale from Brouwerij Van Steenberge - makers of Gulden Drak, Atomium and many other fine beers.

This stuff is a beautiful deep gold color. Huge aroma of sweet spice and bubblegum.
Yeasty and Bready with a candy sweetness (think pixi stix) and a nice warmth from the alchohol (10.5 percent !!!).
This is a huge beer - try it!

I was camping last week and a friend had a cooler full of Deschutes beers.
We cant get them here in indiana, so its a rare treat.
I had forgotten how much I love the Black Butte Porter and especially the Obsidian Stout.
You Oregon folks have it good...

Now if I can just figure out where to get it in bottles I'll make it my summertime sipper.

Okay, so other than the typical Tecate and Corona, what's a "different" Mexican beer to try for Cinco de Mayo? Preferably something with some bite, but still light bodied. Kind of along the lines of a Mexican Samuel Adams, maybe. Anyone? Anyone?

Struise

I had 2 new belgian beers last night -
Struise Aardmonnik (Flemish sour ale - 8%abv) Deep mahogany colored and almost flat with a great winelike body. Funky! - sour cider vinegar nose - bites yer salivary glands when it hits your mouth. Sweet up front with overripe apples and sour cherries (and i mean sour!) but acidic enough to dry out to a woody finish. Just awesome!
and
Struise Pannepot ( Fisherman’s Ale - 10%abv)
This one is darker and with big carbonation. Huge lumpy tan head giving off a great sweet aroma of dates, honey and bubble gum. Tastes sweet too - but balanced with some spice and a little of the alchohol. So much going on with this beer, I'd have like to spend more time with it!
Both are really 'wild' and estery tasting - really complex
both are in my "best beers evar" list.

Brew Geography

I recently moved to a totally new part of the country for me (that would be TX) and I am enjoying trying all the local brews I had never seen before. Lately, I am obsessed with Real Ale Brewery, particularly their Fireman's #4 Blonde Ale, which I cannot seem to get enough of on hot, sunny days. Also v.good are their Rio Blanco Pale Ale and Full Moon Pale Rye Ale. I don't know how far these brews migrate, but if you see them anywhere, I recommend taking a good long draught!

Anyone else had the experience of moving to/visiting a new part of the U.S. and discovering a local gem? One of these days I'm going to do a cross-country drive and I'd like to compile a list of all the local-only breweries to hit along the way. Hmm, guess I'd better get myself a designated driver, too...

Did anyone else on this list make it to the fest on December 1st and 2nd? My wife and I went with wto friends (one of whom came into the San Diego area from Colorado for the event). This is the 4th time we've been to the event, which this year had over 65 beers of 8% abv or higher.

We shared the samples we got, and so we each tried about 30 of the beers. Yum.

If you live in New york or the east coast, be on the look out for Defiant Brewing Co. They are based out of Pearl River and have only been open since September. They make a Belgian Triple, a strong Blond ale, (Like duvel but lighter so it really hits you without you realizing) a very tasty English Porter an above average AMber Lager and a very flavorfull bu tnot overwelmingly bitter IPA. Be on the lookout for it in cask only because they havn't started bottling yet. the lower east side and brookllyn are your best bets to find it. Cheers!

anyone else had this? it's definitely an acquired taste but after the initial shock (i didn't realize it was vanilla spiked) it went down easy. not sure i could drink a sixer of it but it was tasty in a small dose.

Curious if anyone from around the Tribe was able to get their hands on this wonder of a brew...here's my rating from RateBeer.com:

"On tap into a English Pint at Duck Island in Seattle, WA, and out of a 22 oz bottle. I will compare the differences later. This black beauty pours that ever so wonderous dark-as-night black with almost no head whatsoever, but with traces of dark tanned lacing. Ruby colored edges can be seen when held up to the light. The aroma wafting of this one brings a huge hint of vanillad coffee, roasted dark malts, an intense woody note, and a tiny touch of bourbon. The onslaught to the palate begins with that ever so delicate vanilla flavor intertwined with sweet malts before being overtaken by the dark molassesy and roasty malt body. As this happens the depth of this brew comes out. The bourbon soaked wood flavor touches the tongue very lightly (lighter than expected). A deep chocolate and coffee note moves into the flavor and begins to finish the taste. Bourbon, wood, and light vanilla resins linger on the palate as you feel a slight alcohol singe up the nostrils and on the edge of the back of your tongue. Definitely can feel the warmth on its way down. Thick and silky smooth feel on the palate. Very full bodied. On tap this felt much smoother and not as intense in most of the areas. Enjoyable in both ways, but if you want the fullest experience, let a bottle warm to 55 degrees and drink it out of a Snifter. Overall an amazing brew (the best from Deschutes in a while), but definitely is second still to the Full Sail Black Gold (which is not a bad place to be at all!!). Delightfully intense!!"

Aroma: 8/10, Appearance: 5/5, Flavor: 8/10, Palate: 4/5, Overall: 17/20 for a combined score of 4.2/5.

Anyone else been blessed by this one?

Everything is now in place for a fantastic time brought to you by the TCO. We are very proud to have Dj Rilla back with us, for those of you who have been paying close attention, you remember he was booked for one our very first parties Peak Frontier. Unfortunately due to our local friendly men in uniform, the satisfaction of hearing his blazing skills were postponed until now. Danny Mesa is back with a vengeance, representing the 805 like few can, as old school and true as a dj can be. We finally have Puppy Kicker on board, this talented artist and dj is a force to be reckoned with, and what would a jungle party without a Loud Ass Bastard? Synr will be sharing a set with StepCorrect so expect conscious hip hop, trip hop, dubstep goodness. For the first time we are going to offer shuttle service, yes, we will come and pick you up at home and take you home at the end of the night! Please take full advantage of this if you have been drinking, you're too valuble to lose. 570-4299 for a ride. Muddy Waters does have a nice beer and wine selection for those of you interested. The location is 508 E. Haley St
See you there,

Best beer store...most complete Lambic selection?

Hello All-

After moving from California some 12 years ago, I have returned. Though not a Bay Area resident I am a relatively frequent visitor. Having been out of the loop for so long I have lost track of the Liquor stores with decent beer selections.

I am searching for Cantillon, Drie Fontenien, Girardin, Hanssens and other Lambics. I've been trying to build my cellar back up after doing some sharing over the holidays. I live in Truckee so I'm traveling down I-80; so places near the freeway would be my first choice but I'm willing to venture off the beaten path for the 'ultimate selection'...

Thanks in advance!

I noticed that the last couple of bottles of Hennepin I brought home said that the beer was brewed in Belgium by Duval. In the past, the labels said "brewed in Cooperstown, NY". I know that Duval bought at least a part of the ownership of Ommegang a couple of years back. Have they totally closed the brewery and moved production offshore?

137-year-old brew tastes "absolutely amazing"

137-year-old brew tastes "absolutely amazing"

London, Dec 11: A recently discovered cache of 1869 ale should have been undrinkable, but liquor and beer connoisseurs are claiming that the brew tastes "absolutely amazing".

The Victorian beer was part of a cache of 250 vintage bottles found in the vaults of Worthington's White Shield brewery in Burton-on-Trent. The bottles will not be sold and have yet to be valued.

According to The Telegraph, the 137-year-old ale has the flavor of raisins and sultanas, baked apple and honey.

The 1869 Ratcliff Ale is bright and luminous like an ancient Amontillado sherry and has a meaty character like smoked partridge with hints of molasses.

One of a handful of people to have tasted the 137-year-old beer is Mark Dorber, a beer connoisseur and publican at the award-winning White Horse in Parson's Green, London, who has the largest range of bottled beers in Britain.

"It's amazing that beers this antique can still taste so delicious," he said.

The Ratcliff ale commemorates the birth of Harry Ratcliff into the brewing family, which became part of the Bass, Ratcliff and Gretton Empire.

All the beers were bottle conditioned, which means they were allowed to develop and mature after they were corked, like a wine. They were also strong - around 10 per cent proof.
The high alcohol content, similar to barley wine, stopped them from deteriorating.
The beers will be recorked to preserve them and displayed at the Museum of Brewing at Coors Visitor Centre in Burton.

You are invited to a party thinking they were cool enough, so you accept the invitation. By doing this, you are also assuming that they have some sort of idea of what is good to drink and serve to the friends they invited. But you are wrong..............
Coors Light
Bud Light
Molsen Ultra

What do you do?
Graciously decline and have NO BEER the whole time you're there whining about how CRAPPY it is that they were somewhat ok to hang out with until this travesty?

Or, drink one and gag while complaining to whomever else you went with, the whole time appologizing about your bad judgement.

I face this problem more times than not. I now have a mini cooler in the car stocked if we go anywhere that just might suck.

I love this Munich beer so much. I recently found out about it via a Beers of the World sampler from Cost Plus World Market that I got for Christmas. Then I saw it at the grocery store and it was only $2.25 for a 13.5 oz or so bottle. It has overtones of banana and the carbonation is so smooth. I'm not usually a banana fan, but this just hits my palette so perfectly.

Another great beer in the sampler was a Lion Red from NZ. I also tried a Croatian beer, a Thai beer, and a Guatemalan beer although I forget their names. Best gift I've ever gotten for Christmas.

Cachaça Gabriela - Organic

Cachaça Gabriela - Organic

Cachaça Gabriela is my name. Explaining: cachaça is the same of spirit, schnaps, eau de vie. That's a brazilian name for the spirit made from the sugar cane juice. Typical from Brazil.

But, I'm better than the cachaças I know you already know: I'm organic and artisan made.
That means that we follow the principles to being totally integrated with the environment. Plants are grown without any kind of chemical products giving the sugar cane full organic status. And the way I am produced is really similar to an art: we have to have patience and wait for my right time to drink: at least one year I rest at brazilian's wood barrels: jequitibá-rosa, amburana, bálsamo, amendoim.

No body drinks beer anymore?
Nothing good happening at your local liquor store or bar?!?!?!?!

I had a killer beer last night!
a 'Hiver' from Brasserie Fantôme ( http://www.fantome.be/ )
I dont even know how to descibe this beer!
It's a "winter" saison -
It was pretty cold when i started on it (was out in the garage) it had a big yeasty spicy nose that hit me while i was pouring it - but the first sip was still a (pleasant) surprise!

Very Tart and estery - v e r y(!) dry at first.
The Huge carbonation and dryness of this beer made it seem like it evaporated off my tongue when i swallowed it - Like a good dry mineral water does - with only the spicy/herbal charater left behind - - -

But as it warmed up a little and got some air it just kept getting more complex and fruity- lemon and orange peel and clove and some honey like sweetness as i got further into it - but never losing its Yeasty esters and acidity.
I'm sure i'm not doing this beer justice - One of the more complex beers ive had in a long time.

calvados barrel aged Cidre Dupont Réserve

This was my warmup beer (well, cider) saturday for GBS 100 and (although im not that well versed in ciders) it was hands down - the best cider ive ever had -
It had a wonderfull gueuze-like sour funkyness
an odd mixture of fresh crisp apples and old brown mushy apples with a honey-like sweetness that long lingered on the palate.
some spicyness and woody or grassy notes-
but no bitterness at all -
wonderful sparkling carbonation
Huge flavor - but really mellow -
I'll certainly drink this again -

I recently had Black Boss Porter A Baltic Porter brewed by BOSS Browar Witnica. It is 9.4% Alcohol, but is so amazingly smooth and delicious you would never know it. It is not that expensive either.

Where to buy Blackened Voodoo?

Please help. Has anyone seen Blackened Voodoo back on the shelves yet? If so where?

I know that Dixie Brewing Company had some trouble with Katrina, but in interviews they said that they were going to contract out to a couple of other brewers to get back on their feet.

I'm working on a project and work like to incorporate a bottle cap from this beer into it. Plus it's mighty tasty.

Thanks.

OR maybe not.

One night on the town..getting blasted with my favorite beers, led to a morning in which i had to go to work at 10 am. Made it there on time but my boss wanted to know what i had done the night before. Despite water...brushing of teeth....tongue flossing.... How can i avoid the smell of alcohol after hard partying? Any tricks? Remedies? How do you go about it. I know it comes from your stomach so i was hoping someone would know a way about suppressing Post-Party mouth funk?
